Smart glasses: Italian SA met Facebook and Luxottica
Both companies say they are ready to start awareness-raising and information campaigns in collaboration with the Italian SA to foster responsible use

Yesterday, the Italian SA (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali) met representatives from Facebook and Luxottica.

The meetings were sought by the two companies in order to start a dialogue on the questions submitted by the Italian SA to Facebook, which focused on the privacy implications of the recently marketed Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses. The glasses are equipped with a ‘Facebook View’ feature enabling audio and video recordings.

In the past few days, the Italian SA had lodged a formal request for information with the competent Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) so as to assess compatibility of the smart glasses with privacy legislation.

During the meetings, the two companies said they were ready to start, also by liaising with the Italian SA, awareness-raising and information initiatives addressed both to the purchasers of the glasses and to the public at large. The Italian SA reserved the right to evaluate effectiveness of the factual proposals to be put forward by the two companies.

Facebook declared they had already sent the DPC the replies to the questions submitted by the Italian SA with a view to the assessment to be carried out by the latter.
